LIS (laboratory information systems)

Order out. Validated result back, matched to the order that asked for it.

What this class of system is

A LIS is the software that runs the laboratory and the analysers it manages: order in, validated result out.

orophin speaks HL7 v2 (ORM out, ORU in) and ASTM to the analysers. Out: orders; in: validated results matched to the order. Forge, Atlas, and Sentinel consume and produce the data.

Everything above rides one path. The on-prem orophin agent speaks the protocol on the hospital's own network and opens a single outbound mutually authenticated link to the Pensieve backend. Your network team approves egress.

On the wire

What it emits, and what carries it

The traffic

An order leaves as ORM^O01 or OMG^O19 carrying the accession the laboratory will print on the tube. A validated result returns as ORU^R01, one OBX per analyte, with the unit, the reference range and the abnormal flag the laboratory set. A corrected result returns as a second ORU with a correction status, and the correction has to replace the value the clinician already read.

What breaks here

A result that arrives without the order it answers. Pensieve matches an inbound ORU to the Forge order by accession before it becomes a value in the record, so a result never lands on a patient as an orphan, and a result the bridge cannot match is held with the reason attached rather than dropped. Sentinel watches the thresholds on what does land.

What a name in this register means

Compatibility only. Pensieve connects to systems in this class over the protocol they speak. Naming a system describes the connection Pensieve is built to make; it implies no partnership, no certification, and no existing deployment.

Powerful. Responsible. Pensieve.
