Connoisseur
Application Development
- Level: Senior
- Location: Hybrid
- Full/Part: Full-time
Location
This role may require you to travel to Sydney, and All Across India (especially to Hyderabad, Noida).
Pensieve builds software for private and government hospitals. We are building it as a deep-technology institution, with the software engineering rigor that has never been done before in medicine. The systems underneath are formally specified and machine-checked, access is controlled to a fine grain, and correctness is treated as a first-order requirement.
Pensieve builds the software system for hospital operations and clinical records for hospitals, and patients. A modern hospital is one of the most data-rich environments on earth. Data ranges across vitals streaming from bedside monitors, admissions and transfers firing every minute, lab results, imaging studies, clinical notes, orders, theatre schedules, and staffing rosters. A minor glitch in the software can result in delayed discharges, missed deterioration, overcrowded emergency departments, and unavoidable harm.
We build software for the institutions that never close, where reliability is not a metric: it is a duty.
Role overview
- The Connoisseur holds the bar for taste across every interface Pensieve ships. The clinicians on the frontline set that standard, and your work is to see that each screen meets it before it reaches them.
- You review interfaces before they ship, early enough that the frontend engineers’ work needs only minimal change by the time it reaches you. A review that arrives at the end and sends a screen back to the beginning has cost everyone the time it was meant to save.
- You guard the design language alongside the engineers who maintain RetinaJS, Pensieve’s frontend design system, so that a screen built this year and a screen built years from now read as one product.
Rounds
- A Connoisseur goes on Rounds to judge a screen where it is used. You watch a nurse reach for it during a busy shift and ask three things of it: is it calm, is it legible under fatigue, and is it hard to misread?
- A screen that passes review at a desk can still fail beside a bed at the end of a long shift. What you see on the ward decides what you send back.
Core responsibilities
- Review every clinical and operational interface before it ships, and say precisely what has to change and why.
- Work with the frontend engineers from the first sketch, so that taste is designed in and not corrected afterwards.
- Guard Pensieve’s design language with the engineers who maintain RetinaJS, and decide what enters it.
- Judge density, hierarchy, type and motion against how a screen is actually read on the floor.
- Write the standard down: the principles and the examples a new engineer can learn the bar from.
- Bring what you see on Rounds back into every review.
Technologies we use
- RetinaJS, our internal frontend design system.
- TypeScript and React. You will read the code behind an interface, not only its screenshots.
- The browser, as the place an interface is finally judged.
- Whichever design and prototyping tools let you show a change most clearly.
What we value
- An eye that sees what is wrong with a screen before it can say why, and the discipline to then say why.
- Restraint. The best change is often taking something away.
- Care for the person who reads the screen exhausted, in a hurry, with a patient waiting.
- Respect for the engineers whose work you review, and reviews they are glad to receive.
- Respect for medicine, where an interface that looks good and misleads does more harm than one that looks plain and reads true.
What we require
- Proof of work: interfaces you have designed or shaped, shown with the reasoning behind each decision.
- A deep understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy and interaction for dense information.
- Enough fluency in TypeScript, React and the web platform to judge an interface as built, not only as drawn.
- The ability to explain a judgement of taste in terms an engineer can act on.
- One personal website that holds your work, with nothing scattered across other links.
- Clearance to travel abroad, including a valid passport, since the role may take you to Sydney.
What helps, but is not required
- Experience designing software for healthcare or another domain where a misread has consequences.
- Experience building or maintaining a design system.
- Experience with data-dense, operational, or visualisation-heavy interfaces.
- Familiarity with research on cognition, attention, and reading under fatigue.
Where you will work
We prefer hybrid work. You can work remotely as per your choice, but you will be required to come to our notified cluster office whenever required. It’s usually at the time of a new deployment, or at least once a month, and that can extend up to a week. We notify you about it in advance.
Benefits
- The estimated salary range for this position is ₹55,00,000 to ₹1,35,00,000 per year. Total compensation may also include equity, a sign-on bonus, and other future incentives.
- Final compensation is determined by each individual’s qualifications, experience, skills, and other relevant factors. The range above excludes the value of any sign-on bonus, the value of any benefits offered, and the future value of any long-term equity.
- Comprehensive medical insurance for employees and their eligible dependents, covering outpatient care, dental, and vision.
- Group term life, personal accident, and disability cover, provided automatically to every employee.
- Relocation assistance for you and your family if required.
- Two weeks of paid time off at the time of Deepawali, subject to team and business needs.
- Ten paid holidays across the calendar year.
- A supportive leave of absence program, including time off for medical events and other significant life circumstances.
- Paid leave for new parents.
